To CCL teaching couples and promoters, friends and benefactors

It is some time since my last newsletter in February. This does not mean that we have been inactive, as you will see from the following news.

Czech Republic

The slides, in the form of PowerPoint presentations/JPG images, and the teaching texts to go with them have at last been completed. This has been a process lasting some 3 years, in which we have received feed-back from the teachers, which has been taken into account. In a working week-end, in which Jozef came over from Slovakia, we made the final comments, so that the materials were sent out to the teachers in August. Did I say they were completed? Last week we got some more feed-back, pointing out important omissions which will be added. With the old slides there was little possibility of change, so we just used them for years, but with computer technology change is easy. Whilst reacting to new impulses we have tried to retain all the essential material from the original slides and teaching texts.

Georgia

It is gratifying to see the first-fruits of our English manual. Dr. Khatuna Meurmishvili of Tbilisi, Georgia has published a Georgian translation. The Georgian script is delightful to the eyes though unintelligible to us. The graphics and the occasional English words remaining in them prove that it is indeed a translation of our book. As a two-colour version, like the original, would have cost $3,000, Khatuna had to be content with a black and white version for $1,200. The main thing is that this new manual will be an important tool for the expansion of our work in Georgia. It is a poor country, torn by war and conflicts, but in which there is lively interest in NFP and the promotion of marital chastity. Your contributions enable us to support this desire in a very meaningful way.

Slovakia

Since less income is available from the USA, due to the financial crisis, Jozef has been able to obtain a half-time post which should last for a period of 3 years, and which allows him reasonable time to work for CCL Slovakia. So with his additional duties he is more busy than ever.

Currently it is necessary to publish new editions of both the manual with the workbook and Marilyn Shannon’s Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition, both of which are now out of print. The new edition of the manual will include the revisions of the Czech and English editions, as well as fuller material on the return of fertility after childbirth, as women have many questions about this which are not dealt with in the previous editions. The necessity of producing a new edition of Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition coincides with the publication of the 4th English edition, which has been completely revised by the author and is about 50% larger than the 3rd edition. It is virtually a new book. The basic translation has now been finished and it has to be checked by specialists in the field. Nutrition is a fairly new speciality in our countries, but fortunately there are now people to consult. Jozef has of course applied to CCLI for permission to publish. Provided this has been sorted out in time it should be possible to publish the book by Christmas. The manual and workbook are due at the same time. Your donations will help to defray the printing costs.

International workshop in Warsaw - the San Benedict Project, 5th-6th September 2009

Seven CCL members from our two countries, 4 from the Czech Republic and 3 from Slovakia, attended this workshop. There were also participants from other NFP organisations, both from our countries and also from a variety of East European countries, as well as people who had studied at the John Paul II Institute in Rome and from diocesan family centres.

The project was set up by Prof. René Ecochard (France) and Dr. Michele Barbato (Italy), who observed that interest in NFP had been declining in their countries. The purpose of the workshop was to stress the importance of including theological elements, particularly John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, in NFP teaching. The inclusion of moral teaching has of course been part of the CCL concept from the beginning. John Kippley realised the importance of this approach when he founded the League in 1971 and included the Covenant Theology in CCL courses!

For us the workshop was an opportunity to make contacts and to see our own work in an international context. It was encouraging to see that we are not alone, working in our own little patch.

We are very grateful for your prayers and donations for our work. We remember you in our prayers.
