NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING INTERNATIONAL, INC. (NFPI)

When the Board of Directors of CCL International (CCLI) announced in September 2004 that they would no longer be supporting CCL work in countries which did not operate in English or Spanish, the founders of CCLI, John and Sheila Kippley, who had felt compelled to resign from the Board in December 2003, decided to take action.

Slovakia. They were particularly concerned that the flourishing work in Slovakia would be brought to a halt because the funding of Jozef Predac, the Slovak director was to cease on 1st January 2005. Through their campaign they managed to achieve that the Board agreed to give Jozef in effect an ex gratia payment of his salary up to June 2005.

In order to raise funds for the work in Slovakia on a long-term basis the Kippleys then founded a new not-for-profit organisation Natural Family Planning International, Inc. (NFPI). Through this organisation they have provided the chief source of Jozef's salary up to 2009.

Continuation of the Kippleys" work. The second major reason for setting up NFPI was to enable the original Kippley-Prem method to continue in the USA. The Kippleys emphasise three key aspects of their Triple Strand approach with which they stared CCLI in 1971:

1) The full Sympto-Thermal method of NFP
2) Ecological Breast-feeding as a form of natural family planning
3) The simple covenant theology to support Humanae Vitae

They consider the new approach of CCLI to be a rejection of the content of the Triple Strand. They consider their classic Triple Strand method to be more complete and thus more adequate. For example, the seven standards of ecological breast-feeding taught by Sheila Kippley are no longer taught by CCLI, and their approach to morality seems not to be so clear-cut.

These points can obviously be discussed from both sides. Certainly the Kippleys have achieved an enormous success with their work with CCLI since it was founded in 1971 to the time they left it in 2003. The re-tooled method, introduced by CCLI in 2008, is new. It has been greeted positively by many CCLI teachers, but it will be a number of years before a full assessment will be possible.

Web site. The Kippleys have promoted their new organisation to a great extent through their web site, www.nfpandmore.org. The site contains information about their publications, including a new NFP manual which can be downloaded free of charge, three new books on breast-feeding and a weekly blog, plus a number of resource articles.

NFP classes. The Kippleys have resumed active NFP teaching, they have set up teacher training, so that there are at present 8 teaching couples. Their Home Study Course has been recognised by the US Bishops' office for NFP.

When one considers that the Kippleys are retirees and volunteers, their achievement in setting up and developing NFPI, as they have done so far, is truly remarkable.

CCL in Slovakia and the Czech Republic continue to teach the classic content of the Triple Strand approach to NFP and have an informal cordial and cooperative relationship with the Kippleys.
